Mother, Roland & wife, Norma & Ruth and Cecil and I went to Sunday school & meeting in the Buick. I drove. Roland was one of the speakers in meeting; he gave a good talk. Marvin Thain also spoke. We are all well and are blessed with plenty of good food and sufficient coal to burn. It has taken a lot of coal this winter due to the very cold weather. 10 1929 Feb. 23. Went to Hyde Park and attended The Old Folk’s Party - the meeting in the A.M. and the banquet in the afternoon at which the program was continued. A splendid dinner was served to 300 people. Feb. 23 – Gordon came down this morning with the Pontiac for Arvel to go to school. He & Miss Love staid at Iones last night again. He went back up with Arvel. Lowell is doing the chores. The weather is rather cold this morning & foggy. There have been some terrible snow- storms along the Atlantic coast states recently and many lives have been lost. Every day seems to take a heavy toll of lives and property. Destructive agencies are certainly at work. 11 Mar. 1, Cloudy and quite mild today. We are all well. Gordon went to S.L. today. Roland went to Richmond & Logan to get his certificate from JWF J.W. F[---] and to Logan to get the numbers for his car. The M.I.A. men are staging a play tonight in all the wards. In the evening we went to the meeting house to witness a program of exercises put on by the eight wards of the M.I.A. of the Cache Co. stake. One ward followed another from one ward to another each putting on a different part. The entertain- ment lasted utnil 12 oclock. It was a very entertaining arrangement. Arvel’s term of school closed today at the U.A.C. He has been very regular and prompt in attendance, qualities that make for success. Mar. 2. Cloudy and thawing this morning. We are all well. Mar. 3. Attended meeting & S.S. Spent the rest of the day at home, Roland & Alta went to H.P. 12 Mar. 4. Went to brother A.V.’s and heard all the inaogeration inaugural address and all the proceedings over radio. It was as vividly portrayed as if we had been on the ground, Every word on the announcer was distinctly heard as was also the playing of the numerous bands. The speaches of every one who took part were as distinctly heard as if we had been within ten feet of the speakers in- cluding the speeck of Chas. Curtis and the splendid inaugural speech of Herbert Hoover, the president. From time to time the announcer said it was raining, sometimes very hard and at other times not so hard. The announcer stated that the crowd in the procession were drenching wet. The day here was beautiful & springlike. Mar. 5 – Took Norma to Logan to get her music lesson, Carrie went too. We re- turned by way of Smithfield as Carrie wanted to see her sister Mary. I received a letter from B. H. Roberts today acknowledging the receit of a letter I sent him including lines I wrote about him. 13 Mar. 4 – All well, I went to Logan this morning and placed a letter with The Journal people giving an account of the life-labors of J. Z. Stewart after which I went to the office of Mr. C. W. Ph Pehrson and purchased a radio. I turned the Edison phonograph on the deal. We are enjoying the members on the radio tonight very much. The “M.” men are entertaining the Gleaner girls and some of the ward authorities tonight. Roland and Alta have just got home from Logan now 9-50 from a visit to their relatives Roland had a tooth pulled and is in some pain. Mar. 11. We had rain last evening and part of the night, it has been snowing to- day and now at 6- p.m. it is still snowing but not hard as the snow melts about as fast as it falls. We are enjoying the radio very much but were disappointed last evening when the lights went out, due to some arrangement of the plant at Cache Junction especially as we expect to hear Elder B. H. Roberts over K. S. L. deliver a sermon. Gordon worked for Reynold today hauling hay. He was not home last evening to help milk. 14 A long article appeared in Sat Journal that I placed with that paper telling of the life of Bro. J. Z. Stewart. Mar. 12. Cloudy and occasional snow storm. In answer to a phone call by me this morning, Roland and Alta came over today from Corrinne and got ready and at 5.15 they left for S. L. C. where they intend to spend the night & tomorrow go on to Nephi where they expect to start house-keeping and Roland will work on the State Road in that vi- cinity, Arvel went up to Logan with Roland to bring back the car & tracter. They gave a matenee this p.m. We are all well. Mar. 21 – It rained hard most of the night and part of the morning but now, at 2 p.m. it is clearing. The radio is now telling of a boat race in Los. Angeles. The American boat won today, but yesterday Miss “England” be[-]t as the “American” or Miss America went out of commission after being quite a distance in the lead on the first round. Today Miss England went wrong. but was a long way behind when she went out of com. Should it clear up now and keep fine it will be fine. There is a great difference in the design of “Miss America” & “Miss England. The America is mehogany color and Miss England is White she also has her motor be- hind the driver. The others is in front. [---] Segrave of England run “England” Com. Garwood drove Miss America. 16 1929 Benson Mar. 23 – There was quite a fall of snow last night and it is snowing to- day, but it is melting about as fast as it falls; but the day is bleak & dreary I copied Lowell’s patriarchal blessing in the same book the other blessings are written. It is a grand blessing contain- ing many glorious promises. We are all well and find much pleasure in listening to the radio [---]. There is seldom a time during the day that there is nothing given. I think the buying of a radio was a good investment. There is a big concert in Logan tonight consisting of 250 voices and I should like to go especially as my friend, Bro. John James & wife say they are coming up; but the storms & the bad road makes me reluctant to tackle it. and I may not go much as I would like to. Mar. 26 Fine today – Took Norma to Logan to take her music lesson from Mrs. Geo. Thatcher. Went to meeting at night and took charge of my class – We are all well. The radio furnishes us lots of entertainment. 17 1929 Mar. 27. Beautiful morning All well. . . 30. All well. Nice weather. The roads are dry. Cleaning up around home. Sold Luna today - $125. Yesterday Carrie and Naoma & I went to Logan At night the young people surprised Ruth at our home. Boys are hauling out manuer today. Benson Apr. 5. After several beautiful days that dried the roads, and the land almost ready to plow – in fact some plowing is being done, it started to rain last evening and rained hard most of the night, and it is rather doubt- ful if it will clear off today. It would be most marvelous if a conference rain did not come. There have been very distructive floods in the U.S. lately especially in the Miss. river basin. Many have lost their homes and some lives have been lost. The conditions in Mexico are bad as there is a war between the Gov. and rebels as they are disignated. No doubt there is some justification for some dissatisfac- tion. The L.D.S. colony in Mex is getting along nicely according to a report of the Pres. of the L.D.S. church in that land 18 Apr. 7 – This has been a very interesting day to us as we have had a very clear radio report of the singing of the great Tabernacle assisted by Ogden choir, also the splendid discourses delivered by the general authorities of the church and the presidents of the missions. This radio service is most marvelous. Sister Steele and Lile have been with us. Fri. & Sat. were very interesting instructive days in our reception of the conference pro- ceedings. These were stormy days. Gordon went to S.L.C. Fri. There is good evidence of clearing up. Fri. I took a biographical sketch of Joel (Father) Ricks to The Journal and it was published in Saturday’s issue. I am preparing a sketch of the life of Brother George Thomas. Sent in in later. Apr. 9 – Today in the anniversary of Mary’s birth born in 1865 and died June 7, 1898. Wanda & Leland took dinner with us today. I took Norma to Logan this morning to take her music lesson. It was snowing hard & blowing. There was quite a fall of snow on the ground. I got the paint I ordered last fall from Davis Paint Co. to paint the barn. 19 Apr. 15 - Fine day. Walk and Mary came down this morning and spent the day with us. I have been painting the garages. The cows were tested for tuberculosis this morning. The boys hauled a load of hay today. Due to the recent storms, the ground is too wet to work yet so we shall be late with our crops this year. Farmers are getting anxious to get their crops planted. There have been very destructive storms in the Southern & Middle states causing bad floods. The war in Mexico is still raging, Many raids are being made on brewing establish - and much liquor is found. Bootleggers are active throughout the country. The prospect are favorable for farm relief measures, with a duty of $2.40 per cent - on sugar. Today is arbor day and business estab- lishments are closed. Benson, Apr. 23 - Carrie, Norma and I have been to Logan today to do a little busi- ness and Norma to take her music lesson. Arvel & Lowell are hauling hay from A.J.’s 20 Apr. 23 - (other page [-]) There has been so rain that very little has been done in the line of farm work. We have planted nothing yet. Gordon left for the South Sunday morning. Do not know for how long. I and fixing up and painting the barn somewhat. Am not very strong. Bro. Alma Olsen died last Mon. 22. Apri. at 4.30 a m. of Spinal Meningitis, He had been ill since Wed. last. Ex. Gov. William Spr[-] died recently in Washington from a second stroke of paralysis and funeral services will be held in Salt Lake city. The time of the funeral has not yet been announced. George Foster, Wm’s father-in-law was taken to S.L.C. again on Sat. last, he was taken down on Wed. previous, but the doctors said they could do nothing for him so he was taken back home to Whitney. It looks like his earthly career has nearly come to an end - sorry to say. He has been and affectionate husband and a loving father. He has been a very hard worker and a good manager all his life. 21 1929 Apr. 29. The weather today has been unsettled; however we have been able to do farm work most of the day i.e. Arvel & Lowell have been dishing & harrowing. I have been painting the barn all day beginning about 6:30 Arvel received a letter from Gordon written Sun. from S L.City stating that he worked Sat. night. I received a letter from R.B.T. Taylor stating that his wife’s sister Ada had been operated upon for gall stones. Appendicitis and other troubles and came nearly dying, but now she is feeling farely well. Very destructive storms have been experienced in many parts of the country. As I write there is a play being broad-casted from New York City through K.S.L. Salt Lake city. Yesterday a Tarbet boy and a Lundquist boy had a narrow escape of being badly hurt when the Ford car The L Boy was driving tipped bottom side up by our cornes from fast driving 22 May 4. Carrie and I went to Logan this afternoon and brought Carrie’s brother, Soren, home with us. He is on a business trip in the interest The Hartford Steam boiler Inspection and Insurance Co. and came down to spend the evening with us. We went around Smithfield to see Walk & Mary. We are having good Spring weather lately and Arvel has[-] put in about 5 acres of beets, 3 a. of corn and 4 a. of wheat We hope next week to get in a very large share of our crops. A letter from Gordon recently informed us that he contemplated taking a course in the Hennegar business College of S.L.C. Roland and Alta are in Nephi and are getting along nicely. They are house- keeping. May 8 Last Sat. one of the most distressing tragadies occurred in Logan that has ever been know in that city when Oliver Carlson - a bootlegger shot and killed David Dahle, a Logan police-man who was sent by the court to see Carlson in regard to court business. After shooting Dahle he shot himself. 23 Gordon came up from S.L.C. Mon. night. We are having beautiful weather today and are busy plowing and preparing for planting. We have planted 5 a. beets, 3 a. corn and 4 a. wheat. Andrea is visiting us today. Benson May 19 - Have just come from Sunday School. Mother, Norma, Lowell, Ruth, Cecil and Reese who is staying with us all went to Sunday School. This is a beautiful day; we have had fine weather so long that we are wishing for rain. Naoma spent four days last week visiting with us, and the rest of the week with Wanda & Ione and part of Sat with Anna. Carrie & I went to Logan last evening and attended the show at the Capital. The play was by Georgia Jessel - “The Lucky Boy”. Thurs., Fri., & Sat, men worked on the Spring ditch. but did not get the North branch done. Arvel was in charge and took the time. Have not heard from Roland & Gordon for over a week Our crop is all planted and some is beginning to show. 24 May 29. The clouds are gathering Carrie, Ruth, Cecil and I have just returned from a drive to Smithfield Hyde Park and had a short visit with Walk & Mary, with Andrew and Leland & Wanda. They are quite well. I found a nice complimentary letter on my table from My dear Friend Samuel Mitton in regard to the poem I wrote for Mother’s Day, As Bro. M. is a good judge of poetry I ap- preciate the favorable compliment he paid me in his letter. Mon. May 27. The ward began fixing up the meetinghouse grounds today. REESE The greatest joy that comes to man, Is not through wealth and fame; But by a conscience free from guile, And an untarnished name. What profit to a man is it To have great wealth in store; That he has won by unfair means, That made his neighbors poor? What satisfaction can one feel To have the wealth of kings, If there be active in his breast A monitor that stings? The man who wins by honest toil The wealth earth has in store Deserves the commendation Of the rich and of the poor. Just compensation for one’s toil Is only just and right, But how to get the balance true Means many a bitter fight.
